WWF – DCPO is seeking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic

WWF-DCPO Regional Forest Lead
(full-time, preferably based in Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest, Kiev or Sofia)

The Regional Forest Lead contributes to the WWF mission in general and to WWF´s objectives in Central and Eastern Europe in particular through leading the preparation and implementation of multi-country, integrated projects and advocacy work related to sustainable forest management and conservation at regional level. The WWF-DCPO Regional Forest Lead also represents WWF-DCPO in forest related issues both within the global WWF network and externally, and is responsible for developing partnerships.

The WWF-DCPO Regional Forest Lead reports to the Regional Conservation Director, WWF-DCPO and it will based, preferably, in one of the WWF offices from Bratislava, Budapest, Bucharest, Kiev or Sofia.

Your duties will include:

Strategy and Work plan development

  • Lead the development and implementation of forest components of WWF-DCP´s regional Strategic Plan and support national work plans
  • Lead the development of policy documents of WWF related to forestry and contribute to policy documents of other conservation staff, where relevant

Fundraising and project development

  • Drive identification and development of multi-country, complex proposals to donors, working and collaborating with essential regional partners, and support national level fundraising
  • Maintain relations with key donors (EU, T&F, corporate/private)

Project management and implementation

  • Lead or support implementation of multi-country projects related to forest management and conservation and related fields
  • Advise WWF-DCP project teams working on forest-related issues

Advocacy, Partnership Development, and Networking

  • Represent the organization in relevant international forums such as conferences, symposiums, and government and community meetings to communicate and promote our work
  • Lead and support development and implementation of advocacy strategies, including engagement with governmental and private sector institutions primarily at international level
  • Develop partnerships with other international Civil Society Organisations
  • Represent WWF interests in such bodies as Carpathian Network of Protected Areas or Carpathian Convention Working Group on Forests
  • Represent WWF CEE in WWF forums such as the global WWF Forest Practice and the WWF EU Forest group, and coordinate positioning of WWF CEE within the WWF network on forest issues
  • Represent WWF CEE in steering groups of regional projects (e.g IKEA, Mondi);

Staff development and knowledge management

  • Support WWF-DCP´s capacity building efforts on forest issues by coaching and mentoring colleagues and contributing to the design of relevant training programmes and events
  • Facilitate the exchange of forest management and conservation knowledge both within WWF-DCP and with other WWF offices and the external expert and practitioners community
  • Champion on-going learning in the regional forest team, via structured knowledge-sharing and training initiatives

Research and Analysis

  • Monitor and analyse drivers of and trendsin the regional forest sector and develop strategies for reducing threats to forest conservation and for using opportunities
  • Guide the development of innovative approaches in the field of integrated forest conservation within WWF DCP
  • Liaise with scientists and scientific institutions (e.g. Science for the Carpathians network) and networks (e.g. Carpathian Network of Protected Areas) for knowledge transfer and partnership development


  • Work in close coordination with the WWF-DCP regional communication team as well as across the network to communicate issues and achievements to defined target audiences.
  • Lead the development of knowledge products showcasing results of WWF-DCP´s forest-related activities
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of advocacy campaigns and information campaigns

We expect from you:

Adheres to the WWF mission, as well as lives the WWF-DCP’s values: Empowering People, Trust, Impact Driven, Responsibility, Standard of Excellence


  • MSc in forest management, forest conservation, conservation biology or related field
  • At least 7 years relevant work experience in the area of conservation and sustainable forest management
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of sustainable forest management and forest conservation, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Understanding of related subjects such as economics, natural resource management, management of ecological corridors and/or conservation of large carnivores


  • Experience in coordinating/managing diverse international teams
  • Experience in engaging with high-level officials from government and the private sector in a strategic manner
  • Experience in proposal writing for large projects
