Turjánvidék - The Hidden Treasure of the Hungarian Lowlands

A European Union funded project to preserve Turjánvidék. The soggy, squashy vegetation that is difficult to walk on is what we call “turjános”, which gave the name to the whole area and the Natura 2000 territory as well. The project was launched thanks to the European Union’s LIFE-Nature funding instrument, the aim of which is to realise exceptional nature conservation management.

The European Union funded project to preserve Turjánvidék was implemented between 2011-2018 in partnership with the Duna-Ipoly National Park Directorate, the Ministry of Defence and the Budapest Forestry Company. The Natura 2000 network helps preserve valuable habitats and species that are endangered or rare in the European Union or that are characteristic of the natural view of Europe.

The Turjánvidék LIFE programme works with two areas. One is the Turjános Nature Reserve of Dabas, which has been under national protection for almost 50 years, since 1965. The other is the Táborfalva Shooting Range, which is one of the biggest active military shooting ranges in the country. The biggest continuous water and sand habitat system of Central Hungary is found here. Several species, which are endemic to the Carpathian Basin and whose protection is therefore our task, live here. An example would be a subspecies of the Hungarian meadow viper, the Vipera ursinii rakosiensis, one of the most endangered vertebrates in Hungary and Europe. The Táborfalva Shooting Range hides the indigenous sand iris (Iris arenaria) and Hungary’s biggest stock of the beetle species called Carabus hungaricus.
